But once a year I get the chance to play a show with my old musical counterpart, Al MacInnes. We go back a ways. I think we played our first gig at The Skinny Dog in about 1988. By 1990 we were playing two nights a week at ye olde Tunnel Nightclub in the city – YES, THE TUNNEL. In those days we also played a regular at the College Lawn in Prahran… From there we went to our Tuesday night residency at Nick Wheehouse’s The Great Britain in Richmond. That’s probably around 1991. In those days the Great Britain was the greatest pub that side of the river. Checkerboard Lounge played on a Sunday; Kim Salmon on a Monday; Hoss on a Thursday. From there we went to The Punters Club (for eight years); then back to Richmond on a Tuesday night – The Corner Hotel.

Over a thousand gigs. That’s a lot. And a lot to celebrate. Come and celebrate with us on the 22nd of December. We’d love to see you. D

About time I played a show…

Happily I’m playing an intimate acoustic show next Sunday Oct 27 in the historic Victorian town of Inverleigh (just west of Geelong). It’s an all acoustic, conversational affair – so if you’re interested  in where the songs come from…this could be the afternoon for you.

It’s SUNDAY 27th OCTOBER

Hope to see you. D

RRR Radiothon JVG

It’s RRR Radiothon this Sunday!

RRR Radiothon JVG
JVG at RRR

For those of you who love community radio: our last RRR Radiothon show is on this Sunday 18th August.

As you probably know, for the past 15 years or so I have presented a weekly segment called ‘Warner Corner‘ as part of JVG’s RRR Sunday variety show – THE JVG RADIO METHOD. Each show includes segments such as ‘Bland on Bland’ (a poem from Ian Bland); ‘Fuller Shit’ (some philosophy from Keith Fuller) and ‘Dear Jon’ (a letter from Anthony Morgan in Tasmania). At the end of each year, Jon and I also run our big ‘BBQ Day’ fundraiser at Ceres.

Our show, and RRR, is all about supporting local music and presenting an independent voice – the station is totally funded by subscribers, so nobody leans over us and tells us what to say or what to play.

Radiothon is your chance to dig into your pocket and support the station – and keep us on the air! We’d love you to subscribe to our show during the last Radiothon show THIS SUNDAY 18th AUGUST. We’re on between 2 and 4pm, just ring up, or jump online and tell the friendly RRR folk that you’d like to subscribe to our show for another year – you can even subscribe to Warner Corner. Imagine!

Or you can come down in person to the show on Sunday at 2pm. We have live bands playing ‘PARTY’ songs for the entire two hours. Some of Melbourne’s best musicians will be performing FOR FREE. Many musical surprises will ensue. YOU ARE SO WELCOME!

The station is in East Brunswick on the corner of Blyth and Nicholson streets (at the end of the 96 line). If you can’t make it in person, the phone number is 9388 1027. And the web address is rrr.org.au.

Or just tune in and enjoy the great local music – 102.7 FM.

RARE DUO GIG WITH JAMES STEWART

This Saturday night Dan goes right back to where it started – playing as a duo with his old friend and musical compadre, James Stewart. Dan & James began playing as a duo in 1985 in pubs such as The Canada in Carlton and The Beehive in Hawthorn. In 1986, when Dan and James added a rhythm section, The Warner Brothers were born. So, if you feel like goin’ back this Saturday, come on down to The Yarra Hotel at 295 Johnston St, Abbotsford. The Yarra Hotel is Mick Thomas’s new pub, so we’re keeping it all in the family.
