Warner Corner – Birds

I came late to Richmond Fontaine – but Jeez they’re good. When my brother gave me ‘The High Country’ for my birthday one year, I was sceptical. I had liked all their records until that point, but concept records are hard to make work.

This one certainly does – I bloody love it.

Particularly this song. This performance would have to be one of my favourite Warner Corners of all time (that’s saying a lot, the show’s been going more than 15 years!).

Jane Hendry (Broads/The Tiger & Me) sings the haunting answering verse. Just makes you want to grab her hand and keep running…

Dan Warner – vocals and guitar; Jane Hendry – vocals and fiddle; Dave Evans accordion; Nathan Farrelly – Double Bass

Warner Corner – Shaky Ground

Typical Warner Corner
I have fond memories of this Uncle Tupelo record. Almost each Sunday without fail Mick Ruff, the barman at the old Punters’ Club hotel in Fitzroy, would play the album as Al and I set up for the regular Sunday spot. Mick always said that he would love to hear us play Fatal Wound. Didn’t quite get there, Mick, but here’s Shaky Ground instead.
